V76

The famous V76 was developed by the IRT (Institut für Rundfunk GmbH) for the German broadcast-studio´s. After developing the V76 was built from TAB (Tonographie Apparatebau, v.Willisen&Co., Wuppertal-Elberfeld). Unfortunately the firm has to stop their production and was closed in 1973. This amplifier was introduced in 1958 and replaced together with the V72 the older amplifier from the type V41.

As all other amplifiers developed by the IRT, the over all wave band was reduced by fixed input and output filters from 40Hz up to 15kHz. The 40Hz low cut reserved low wave interferences and the 15kHz high cut kept away as example clear frequency from tape recorders.

TAB built five versions from this type, the

  • V76/80 (switchable low cut filters at 80/300 Hz)
  • V76/120 (switchable low cut filters at 120/300 Hz)
  • V76m (without switchable and fixed input and output filter´s/frequency response from 20Hz/20kHz)
  • V76s (ampflifier fpr disc-recording)
  • V76f (switchable amplification with remote control)

The V76m versions has a slightly modified input-transformer, but as all other input-transformers, the primary and secondary windings were subdivided into seven discs. (Take a look here). This special transformer-winding kept the capacities at very low levels to provide at this turn ratio from 1:30 a very wide frequency respond. To give the transformer a very high inductance, only mu-metal were used as lamination. The input-transformer has a special designed multi layer mumetal/copper can, also the output- and the main transformer.

The V76 provides a switchable gain from v=3...76dB, the described switchable input-filters and a 3 kHz rollover cut switch.

Also here in Germany the V76 becomes very rare and the prices raised extremly for this amplifier. If you have the chance to buy one, please open the amplfier and take a look inside. All should be in nice condition. Against microphonic, the two input tubes and the inductor were mounted on an extra plate. This was fixed with four rubber spacer. Take attention on them, if they are broken, this plate rattles inside and gives a lot of microphonic to it. For repairing them, you have to open up the complete ampflifier, which will take a time of four up to five hours. Often we are seeing ampfliers, where this plate is fixed with cork, foamrubber or something else.

The original main-transformer has only one primary-winding for 220 Volts. Using this amp at higher input voltages will reduce the noise figuresand will shorten the life ot the tubes. Especially for the amplfieres, which are used in the US or in other foreign countries, we are providing a main-transformer with the excat original sizes for intput voltages of 117 and 234 Volts.

Also we are reparing broken windings from the input- or output transformers with the original materials which were used from the transformer supplier for TAB, Fa. Haufe. In very heavy cases were are doing a new one.
